MTA's Contactless Payment System Installed At 2/3 Of Stations

NEW YORK CITY – The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced additional progress on its rollout of OMNY, the system's new contactless payment system that is set to replace the MetroCard in 2023.

There are 310 subway stations, roughly two-thirds of the system, that are equipped with contactless OMNY readers. These readers allow customers to pay their fare using contactless bank cards, smart phones and wearable technology.

OMNY installation has also been completed on the 4 and 5 lines, and all but one station has equipped OMNY readers on the 2 and 3 lines.

Each subway station is on track to have OMNY readers by the end of the year.

According to the MTA, the number of riders who have used OMNY since August 2019 increased 168% and since May 2020 usage has increased 50%. The system has recorded more than 16 million taps since it launched.

Additional fare options, comparable to the current 7-day and 30-day passes, will be available in the first quarter of 2021, after the activation of OMNY across the entire NYC Transit system.

OMNY readers accept contactless cards from Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover, as well as digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and Fitbit Pay.
