Mulchfest Is Back For NYC Christmas Tree Drop Offs

NEW YORK CITY — Don't think a Christmas tree will spruce up the sidewalk the same way it does a home during the holidays.

To avert curbs of chucked out conifers, New York City parks officials are bringing back Mulchfest.

Yes, Mulchfest — the annual tradition where New Yorkers can literally chip in to help a city park by recycling their tree into a nourshing mulch. More than 29,000 trees were chipped last year — a number parks officials hope to top.

"Say fir-well to your holiday tree at NYC Parks!" the Mulchfest site exclaims.

Mulchfest runs from Dec. 26 to Jan. 9.

How it works is New Yorkers can haul their trees to parks and sanitation sites scattered across the five boroughs. Some provide chipping on-site, which will run on "Chipping Weekend" on Jan. 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"Bring your tree to a chipping site on Chipping Weekend to take home a tree-mento!" the Mulchfest site states. "We'll chip your tree and give you your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree."
