National School Walkouts in NYC: What You Need To Know
Students at dozens of schools will join a nationwide protest against gun violence on Wednesday.

NEW YORK, NY — Students at dozens of New York City schools will walk out of class at 10 a.m. Wednesday as part of a nationwide protest demanding stronger gun control laws after last month's school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
The walkouts will happen a month to the day after Nikolas Cruz shot and killed 17 people with an assault rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Students and other activists have launched a movement pushing for gun reform since the massacre.
Public, private and charter schools, along with some colleges and universities, are participating. Walkouts are scheduled to last 17 minutes in memory of the Parkland shooting's 17 victims. Elected officials, including Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, will join some of the protests.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has encouraged students to participate in the walkouts. Schools will have lesson plans leading up to the events so students with "all different views" can discuss the issue, the mayor said at a town hall event last week.
Students could face consequences if they don't show up to school until the walkout or leave when it's over, de Blasio said, but the city will respect those who leave class for the predetermined time and then return.

"In that instance it’s going to be understood that people were making a choice of conscience, and it’s going to be talked about, and it’s going to be respected," de Blasio said last week.
