Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. Mayor Eric Adams announced a new plan for 50,000 asylum seekers that have arrived in New York City in the past year, including a new 24-hour arrival center, and relocating some to the 'city of their choice.' He wouldn't disclose which cities that would be. (New York City Patch)
    • Meanwhile, the NYC Comptroller called the city's approach to asylum seekers financially "unsustainable," saying the city should prioritize finding long-term housing. In total NYC is set to spend $4 billion this fiscal year on what's been called a "humanitarian crisis." (Gothamist)
  2. A New York City Housing Authority Preservation Trust, signed into law by the governor last spring, has yet to materialize almost a year later. It was supposed to fund and supervise repairs to 25,000 public housing units, with a nine-member board that to date hasn't been named. (THE CITY)
  3. Some NYC public school students in middle and elementary school are now spending several hours per day on computer programs aimed at quickly improving their math skills ahead of statewide tests. The new directive is concerning to some parents, who worry that online learning wasn't successful during the COVID-19 pandemic. (Gothamist)
  4. Patch is taking a closer look at a competitive City Council race in Harlem, between incumbent socialist Councilwoman Kristen Richardson Jordon, two veteran politicians —Assemblymembers Rev. Al Taylor and Inez Dickens — and Yusef Salaam, one of the Exonerated Central Park Five. (Harlem Patch)
  5. Three former guards at Rikers Island have admitted to abusing sick time leave. One officer admitted on Tuesday to earning $120,000 in public money by collecting his salary while not on the job, falsely saying he was injured. (Subscription/The New York Times)
