New NYC Trash Bin Rules Go Into Effect Next Month

Homeowners and property owners will soon be required to upgrade their trash bins.

NEW YORK CITY —Homeowners and property owners will soon be required to use official New York City trash bins when taking out their waste.

Beginning June 1, property owners with one to nine residential units will be required to use the official NYC Bin, according to the city Sanitation Department.

The city has offered three different bin sizes for property owners — 25-gallon, 35-gallon and 45-gallon bins.

The city Department of Sanitation has said that it's the property owner's responsible that there are enough bins to hold all the trash.

Those that don't buy an official trash bin will be hit with a $50 ticket for the first offense, and it rises to $200 for the third offense.

City trash bins are available for purchase at a number of Home Depot locations across the city and are available for pickup via homedepot.com/NYCBins.

The NYC Bin was first introduced in July 2024 as part of the city's effort to clean up sidewalks of black trash bags and rats.
