New York Blood Center Closes Donor Sites Sunday Ahead Of Winter Storm

The closures are expected to result in the loss of nearly 1,000 blood, platelet donations as the city faces critically low blood supplies.

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Blood Center will close all donor centers and cancel community blood drives across the city on Sunday because of an impending winter storm, officials said.

The cancellations are expected to eliminate nearly 1,000 blood and platelet donations, according to the organization, as the region faces critically low blood supplies.

Officials urged eligible donors to give blood or platelets before the storm to help maintain hospital operations. Platelets, which are used primarily by cancer patients, have a shelf life of five days.
