"We are deeply saddened to lose innovative and beloved children's author, illustrator, and designer Eric Carle, whose colorful, interactive books—including The Very Hungry Caterpillar, one of The New York Public Library's top checkouts of all-time—have enchanted and delighted children for decades. Carle's imaginative, timeless stories are always among the most popular in our children's rooms, and have sparked a lifelong love of reading in countless young New Yorkers. We know that his legacy will live on, and that generations of young readers to come will remain hungry for his relatable tales. Thank you for all you have done, Eric Carle, including your support of public libraries and the NYPL. Rest in peace."
