NYC Drivers Turn to Monthly Car Rentals as Ownership Costs Rise
From a Brand Partner: New flexible rental plans help NYC drivers avoid high ownership costs while staying on the road

NEW YORK, NY — For some New Yorkers, a monthly car rental is becoming a smarter option than ownership, leasing — or even relying on transit alone. As the cost of owning a car in the New York metro area continues to rise, more city residents, commuters, and gig workers are looking for flexible ways to stay on the road without taking on a long-term financial commitment.
Drivo, a New York–area car rental company, has introduced a new Monthly Rental program aimed at drivers who need a vehicle for several months at a time.
Plans start at $719 per month, with the company saying customers can save up to 40% compared with standard short-term rental rates. The service is geared toward a wide range of drivers across New York City and New Jersey, including professionals commuting between boroughs, rideshare and delivery drivers, temporary residents, relocating families, and small business owners who need reliable transportation without buying or leasing a vehicle.
Available options currently include:
- Toyota Corolla from $719/month
- Toyota Camry from $749/month
- Toyota RAV4 from $849/month
Each monthly plan includes maintenance support, tire service, and simple renewal options, helping drivers avoid additional ownership-related costs such as service appointments, unexpected repairs, and depreciation.
The company says the program is also available for both U.S. and international drivers — an important factor in a city with a large number of temporary residents, international professionals, and frequent business travelers.
For some customers, select long-term plans may also include a rent-to-own option, allowing the vehicle to be purchased after two or more years for $1.
“We’re seeing growing demand from drivers who need a car for months, not just days,” a Drivo spokesperson said. “Many people want the convenience of having a vehicle without the financial burden of buying or signing a long lease.” Drivo currently operates across multiple pickup locations, including Brooklyn, JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark, making the service accessible for drivers throughout the metro area.
The booking process begins online, followed by a confirmation call and an in-person visit to finalize the agreement before pickup.
As commuting habits continue to evolve in the city, monthly rentals are emerging as an alternative for drivers who need flexibility, predictable costs, and access to a vehicle without the typical responsibilities of ownership.
