NYC 'Horrified' After Supreme Court Leak Shows Roe V. Wade Reversal
New Yorkers vowed to fight for abortion rights if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, as it appears poised to do from a draft opinion.

NEW YORK CITY — Horrified. Sickening. Despicable. An assault on freedom. Fight like hell.
Angry New York City leaders and abortion rights advocates used those words after Politico published a leaked draft majority opinion that shows Supreme Court justices are poised to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The leak Monday evening prompted immediate uproar across the nation, including New York City, where protesters quickly planned protests over the landmark abortion ruling's potential reversal.

Abortion rights in the city likely will remain secure, as the opinion — if it holds when a final decision on the case comes in late June or July — leaves abortion rights to states to decide, and New York politicians have vowed to protect them.
One such politician is Gov. Kathy Hochul, who declared herself "horrified" by the draft opinion.

"For anyone who needs access to care, our state will welcome you with open arms," she said in a statement. "New York will always be a place where abortion rights are protected and where abortion is safe and accessible. Just as the Statue of Liberty lifts her lamp tall in our harbor, New York will never stop fighting for what's right — unafraid and undeterred."
Politico's bombshell report received confirmation, of sorts, Tuesday when Chief Justice John Roberts denounced what he called an "egregious breach" of trust in the leaking of an authentic draft. His statement emphasized that the draft, however, didn't represent a decision by the Court or the final position of any justice.
"I have directed the Marshal of the Court to launch an investigation into the source of the leak," he said in a statement.
But the draft written by conservative Justice Samuel Alito still raised alarms for abortion rights advocates and others who feared it could erode other rights affirmed by court decisions.
The New York City-based abortion rights group National Institute for Reproductive Health deemed the draft opinion "sickening" amid a call for action.
"Through the despicable words of Alito, we must remember: elections matter," it tweeted. "Together we can make anti-abortion zealots rue the day they set their sites on Roe v. Wade."
Mayor Eric Adams joined the chorus of shock, declaring that New York City knows a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions is hers and hers alone.
“This potential assault on their freedom by right wing extremists cannot stand,” he tweeted.
“We’re ready to fight like hell.”
New York Attorney General Letitia James, who planned to attend a Foley Square protest Tuesday, vowed to keep fighting to protect the right to an abortion.
In a tweet, she noted she fought abortion bans in Mississippi, Texas and other states.
"We will not go backwards," she tweeted. "It’s our body, our choice, and our vote."
"We will continue to do everything in our power to protect the right to an abortion and Congress must act immediately to do the same."
