NYC Online Tool Will Help Residents Fight Hard-To-Cancel Subscriptions
The City is hiring technologists to build digital tools that make services easier to access and solve everyday problems.
NEW YORK, NY— New Yorkers struggling to cancel unwanted subscriptions could soon have a simpler way to report companies they believe violate the city's new consumer protection law.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the launch of the Public Interest Technology Crew, a new initiative that will place teams of technology specialists inside city agencies to build digital tools designed to make government services faster and easier to use.
The first project will create an online complaint portal for residents who say businesses made subscriptions difficult to cancel.

Four teams will work on projects tied to affordability and public services, while a fifth team will receive support through funding from The Rockefeller Foundation to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City.
"Government should be as responsive and innovative as the people it serves," Mamdani said. "New Yorkers should not be forced to navigate systems that are confusing, outdated and burdened by bureaucracy."
What Is The PIT Crew?
The Public Interest Technology Crew is a group of city-employed technology professionals who will work directly with agencies to solve specific problems through digital tools instead of relying on outside contractors.
Each team will include:
- Product managers
- Software engineers
- Designers
- User researchers
- Data specialists
City officials said the teams will develop, test and launch new technology in months rather than years.

How Will The First Project Help Consumers?
The first PIT Crew will partner with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to create an online system for filing complaints against businesses that make it difficult for customers to cancel recurring subscriptions.
The portal is intended to make reporting potential violations faster while giving the city another tool to enforce its Click to Cancel law.
Who Is Supporting The Initiative?
The Rockefeller Foundation is helping fund one of the five PIT Crews through the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City.
Foundation President Dr. Rajiv J. Shah said the effort could serve as a model for other governments.
