New Archbishop’s First NYC Mass Set
Pope Leo XIV made his pick to lead the state archdiocese in December.

NEW YORK CITY — New Yorkers will soon have a new Archbishop, as Ronald Hicks will official take over the Archdiocese of New York on Friday.
Hicks will take over for Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who submitted his resignation last year, required by church law, at 75. This is the state's first new archbishop in 14 years.
Pope Leo XIV picked Hicks of Joliet, IL, in December to lead the state archdiocese, Patch previously reported.

Hicks will formally take over during his installation mass held at St. Patrick's Cathedral at 2 p.m.
"You are going to notice that I am going to reference a number of times Pope Leo the 14th," he said during a press conference on Thursday. "I will strive always to be obedient and respectful to him and also collaborate with his vision."

Hicks, 58, and was first ordained into the priesthood in 1993.
The New York archdiocese is among the largest in the country, serving roughly 2.5 million Catholics in New York City, as well as seven surrounding counties.
