NYC Students Stage Walkout Demanding Gaza Ceasefire

"Resistance against occupation is a human right!" signs were held by throngs of students Thursday as they marched in Manhattan.

NEW YORK CITY — New York City students staged a mass walkout from their schools to demand a ceasefire in Gaza.

Videos from the protests Thursday showed throngs of youngsters walking the streets in Manhattan, where they planned to converge on Bryant Park, carrying pro-Palestinian signs with slogans such as "Resistance against occupation is a human right!"

A coalition of pro-Palestinian groups appeared to organize the Bryant Park rally, variously dubbed "School Out For #CeasefireNOW" and "Shut It Down! For Palestine," social media posts show.

The protests were the latest in the city since Oct. 7, when Hamas forces attacked Israel, slaughtered civilians and took 239 hostages.

Since then, the Israel-Hamas war has seen 1,400 Israeli deaths, mostly on Oct. 7 itself. More than 10,000 Palestinians have been killed.
