NYC Subway Killing: 3 Suspects Caught On Camera, Cops Say

"An isolated, random occurrence," is what a top cop said about a fatal fight a trio picked with a man, 45, on a Bronx train Friday.

NEW YORK CITY — Three suspects who ganged up on— and ultimately killed — a straphanger in a Bronx train were caught on a new subway camera during the fatal brawl, officials said.

The footage, as well as eyewitness interviews, showed the 45-year-old man didn't start the fight on the D train early Friday that ultimately claimed his life, police said.

The straphanger was minding his own business when one man sat next to him about 5 a.m. and sparked an argument, said NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper.

Both stood up and the fight turned physical, ultimately turning into a three-on-one brawl, Kemper said.

"This looks like this was an isolated, random occurrence," he said.

Cops originally said it appeared the man was shot. But Kemper later said the wound was consistent with either a gunshot or a puncture wound.

"That will be determined, the exact wound and cause of this death, by the medical examiner," he said.

The man's apparent violent death is the second such killing on a Bronx train in the past two weeks — a fact that MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber acknowledged could cause concern for straphangers.

Lieber noted that crime in the subway system ticked up 45 percent in January, but said it has actually ticked back down 14 percent so far in February compared to the same month last year.

He said a newly installed camera captured the fight and killing Friday.

"I'm confident that that's going to help the investigations," he said.

NYPD officials Friday afternoon released photographs showing the three suspects in hopes the public can help identify them.
