NYC Under Heat Advisory Until Wednesday

NEW YORK CITY — Get ready to sweat, New York City — a three-day heat advisory is on its way.

The advisory takes effect Monday at 12 p.m. and will run until Wednesday at 8 p.m. Temperatures will hover in the upper 80s, while the heat index could reach up to 97 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Those temperatures can be dangerous, even deadly, but there is some relief. New York City is opening cooling centers Monday at noon.

The forecast for upcoming week doesn't show much of a break in the heat, unless the chance of showers and thunderstorms starting Tuesday counts.

The National Weather Service forecast for the week is:

• Monday — Sunny, with a high near 87. South wind 5 to 9 mph. Night will be partly cloudy, with a low around 76. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph.
• Tuesday — A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 89. South wind 6 to 10 mph. At night, there will be a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 10 p.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 76. South wind 8 to 11 mph.
• Wednesday —A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10 a.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 88. South wind 5 to 10 mph. At night, there will be a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 76.
• Thursday —A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 9 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 88. At night, there will be a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73.
• Friday — A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 86. At night, there will be a 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71.
