NYC Under Winter Weather Advisory As Freezing Rain Falls

NEW YORK CITY — A extra slick commute welcomed New Yorkers as freezing rain fell over the city Wednesday.

The city is under a winter weather advisory until 10 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The freezing rain threatens to lay down a glaze of ice across the city, forecasters warn.

"Very slippery sidewalks, roads and bridges are possible," the advisory states. "The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute."

A smattering of crashes across New York City — including several in Staten Island — and the surrounding area unfolded across the morning.

City sanitation workers went out to help combat the icy conditions.

"They are spreading salt on City streets where needed," the sanitation department's Twitter account stated.

The freezing rain is expected to turn into garden variety rain after 10 a.m., according to the forecast.
