NYC Weather: 90-Degree Highs, ‘Hazardous’ Heat Will Hit This Weekend

Think twice before jumping in the ocean to beat the heat — the water remains so cold that hypothermia could happen in 10 minutes.

NEW YORK CITY — Get ready for a hot — and hazardous — weekend, New York City.

High temperatures across the city Saturday and Sunday could hit 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

And it’s possible that heat indices could reach even higher — up to 95 degrees, forecasters warn.

The expected heat prompted the National Weather Service to issue a hazardous weather outlook for the weekend.

“After a cool Spring, there is an increased risk of heat-related illness for vulnerable populations this weekend with this first heat event of the season,” a National Weather Service weather story states.

But the heat isn’t the only hazard facing New Yorkers.

Water temperatures remain dangerously cold, forecasters said. The hazardous weather outlook is in part a warning for hot New Yorkers who might find themselves enticed to take a dip in the ocean this weekend.

“With the heat expected this weekend, it`s important to keep in mind that ocean, nearshore, and inland water temperatures remain cold, in the 50s to around 60 degrees,” the outlook states. “Physical incapacitation and hypothermia are likely in as little as 10 minutes if you fall in the water, greatly increasing the risk of drowning.”

Not everywhere in the city will hit the 90-degree mark this weekend. Highs near LaGuardia Airport, for example, will top out at 88 degrees Saturday.

Brooklyn’s forecast, by contrast, calls for a 90-degree high Saturday.

Regardless, get ready — it’s going to be a hot one.
