NEW YORK CITY — Heavy rain hammering New York City could also carry severe thunderstorms, flooding and even a "brief tornado," forecasters warn.

The city is under a hazardous weather outlook Friday as a strong frontal system pushes across the region, according to the National Weather Service.

Moderate to locally heavy rainfall is expected, with amounts averaging up to 1 inch and up to 1.5 inches in some areas, the outlook states. Widespread flooding isn't expected, but there's a potential minor local flooding.
