NYC Weather: Severe Thunderstorm Risk Hits City Before Good Friday

The city is under a hazardous weather outlook as forecasters predict potentially heavy rain and wind, the National Weather Service warns.

NEW YORK CITY — Severe thunderstorms could greet New Yorkers on the eve of Good Friday, forecasters warn.

The city is under a hazardous weather outlook Thursday as a line showers and thunders likely will move ahead of a cold front, according to the National Weather Service.

“Strong to locally damaging winds will be the main threat,” the outlook states. “Brief heavy downpours are also possible.”

Thursday otherwise will be a warm spring day.

Highs are expected to reach 77 degrees in the city and there’s only a slight chance of showers until about 3 p.m., forecasters said.

The greatest threat of thunderstorms is expected between then and 8 p.m., according to an NWS weather story. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent, with rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, although thunderstorms could bring higher amounts, meteorologists said.

Good Friday and Saturday will be slightly cooler, with highs excepted to hover near 65 degrees, according to the forecast. Temperatures will drop further on Sunday, which has predicted highs of 53 degrees, the forecast states.
