NYC Weather: Severe Thunderstorms Could Wash Away Wildfire Smoke
The city is under a severe thunderstorm watch Wednesday until 8 p.m.

NEW YORK CITY — Hazy skies tinged with West Coast wildfire smoke could give way to rain and severe thunderstorms Wednesday, forecasters warn.
A cold front moving into New York City could bring heavy rain, damaging winds and hail, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters issued a severe thunderstorm watch effective Wednesday until 8 p.m.

"Good news is the front helps clear our skies out some tonight," the NWS New York office tweeted.

Smoke from West Coast wildfires from Northern California up into Southern Canada blew across the country and enveloped the city's skies starting Monday. The haze created eerie scenes of red desert-colored sunrises and ashen air covering the skyline.

Expect clouds, perhaps bringing rain, to replace the smoke-filled skies on and off through the weekend.

Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 1pm. Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 85. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 7pm. The rain could be heavy at times. Mostly clear, with a low around 66. North wind 8 to 10 mph.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 84. North wind around 9 mph.
