Expect a sticky start to the week — and don't forget to bring an umbrella.

NEW YORK — It's about to get warm — and wet. Thunderstorms will loom over New York City Monday afternoon as the temperature jumps into the 80s, the National Weather Service says.

The mercury is expected to hit a high near 81 in Central Park on Monday, the forecast shows. That's about nine degrees warmer than normal and a far cry from a week ago, when a high of just 49 was recorded in the city.

But some afternoon rain could spoil the sunny Monday. A chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms will threaten the city from about 2 p.m. to the 7 p.m. hour, according to the forecast.

Some stronger storms across the tri-state region could create large hail, rough winds and heavy rain, the weather service warns.

It'll also feel sticky in the city — the relative humidity will be near 80 percent Monday morning before the rain possibly moves in, according to the weather service.

Things should cool down for the rest of the week — highs in the upper 60s and low to mid-70s are expected into the weekend, the weather service's forecast shows.
