NYPD Decries $1M Damage To Vehicles During Protests
Taxpayers will bear costs, along with $70 million in last year's NYPD misconduct settlements and a projected $400 million overtime blowout.
NEW YORK CITY — They've been tagged with graffiti, pelted with rocks, had windows smashed and set on fire. And now there's a tab for all the damage NYPD police vehicles sustained during recent protests over racial injustice — $1 million.
Taxpayers will bear the cost of replacing 14 police vehicles that were burned out of 303 total vandalized, authorities said.
The NYPD claims prompted reports from inside NYPD's vehicle garage and sweeping condemnations against protesters.

A recent IBO report also projected that NYPD overtime in 2021 will blow past a cap imposed the most recent budget. The anticipated total blowout: $400 million.
Then there's the cost of NYPD misconduct — a motivating factor behind the recent protests. Last year, the city paid out $68.69 million in settlements and other costs in police misconduct cases, according to the city's law office.
It paid out $3 million in police misconduct cases so far this year, according to data.
The total cost of all civil claims against the NYPD in 2019 totaled $220 million, according to the city Comptroller's office.
