NYPD Giving Special Attention to Mosques After Quebec Shooting

Mosques around New York City are getting special attention after a deadly shooting at a mosque in Quebec, the New York Police Department announced late Sunday.

"NYPD has directed special attention be given to all mosque/house-of-worship locations citywide," the department said in a statement. "Critical Response Command (CRC) personnel have been assigned to extended tour coverage at certain mosque locations.

"The NYPD is monitoring the situation in Quebec."

The shooting in Quebec happened around 8:00 p.m. local time. Reuters reported that 40 people were inside just beginning evening prayers when three gunmen opened fire. The wire service reported that five people had been killed.

The New York Times reported that a police spokesman at the scene had refused to confirm the number of people killed.
