A 57-year-old Brooklyn man was shot by police Thursday during a frantic struggle to get him to drop his knives, the NYPD said.

NEW YORK CITY — A Brooklyn man armed with a 16-inch knife slashed a cop and was shot amid a frantic struggle outside a Coney Island DMV Thursday, according to officials.
The 57-year-old man — clad in thick red gloves and armed with two knives — charged an officer on West Eighth Street near Sheepshead Bay about 1 p.m., police said.
The man was standing next to an SUV blocking traffic when a cop approached and he lunged, knives in hand, police said at a press briefing Thursday afternoon.

"It was over two minutes they struggled on the ground with him," an NYPD official said at a press conference Thursday afternoon. "He was holding the knife very tightly in his hands and not letting go."
Both the officer and the cop were taken to the hospital in stable condition, said police.
NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said the incident was captured on video and showed a commendable response by the Brooklyn officers.
"I have to commend the actions of these brave officers," Sewell said. "The actions of these officers exemplifies what it means to be New York’s finest."
