NYPD Officer Struck By Bullet While Inside Car In East Harlem: PD

NEW YORK, NY — An NYPD officer asleep in his car between shifts outside his East Harlem precinct was "struck by a bullet" that went through the rear windshield just before dawn on New Year's Day, according to police.

The officer is recovering, police officials said.

Newly sworn New York City Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell held a news conference outside New York-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medical Center where the officer was being treated.

Adams also announced a $10,000 reward in the case.

"We must find the gun. We must find the person who discharged the weapon, and we must find those who believe they're going to destroy our city with gun and gang violence," Adams said.

At the news briefing, police said that surveillance video outside the 25th precinct on East 119th St. shows the officer moving his parked car just before 4 a.m. Police said the officer was leaning back in his seat, reclined, when at just after 6 a.m. the bullet sped through the rear passenger window. "At around 6:15 a.m. he was awoken to rain and a pain in his head."

NYPD investigators are looking at surveillance video in the area, including the Metro North station nearby.

Adams visited the officer, who is recovering, in the hospital officer and spoke with him.
