NYPD Releases Adorable Footage of Police Dog Named After Fallen Officer

The labrador, Randy, is named after Officer Randolph Holder, who was shot in the head and killed last year chasing a gunman in East Harlem.

NEW YORK CITY, NY — One year after the shooting death of New York City police officer Randolph Holder in East Harlem, a police dog named after Holder is being a very, very good dog. Randy, a black labrador, is a K-9 officer who patrols the city, and supports his fellow officers, according to this rather adorable footage released by the NYPD Thursday.

Detective Holder, a Guyanese immigrant who was 33 when he died, was shot in the head on Oct. 20, 2015 while exchanging gunfire with a gunman riding a bicycle on East 120th Street along FDR Drive.

"He ran toward danger," Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said shortly after Holder's death. "It was the last time he will respond to that call."

The K-9, Randy, is trained in explosive detection. His handler is Officer John Etienne. They both work in the NYPD counterterrorism unit.

"At home he's my third child, when working, he's my partner," Etienne says. "You know, he can save my life just as well as I can save his."
