Olivia, Liam: 2020’s Top Baby Names In New York
The U.S. Social Security Administration revealed last year's top names for babies born in New York. See what popular names topped the list.
ACROSS NEW YORK — Olivia and Liam were the most popular names given to babies born in New York in 2020, according to recently released federal data.
The U.S. Social Security Administration on Thursday revealed its annual list that shows the top baby names in every state. In total, 1,008 babies born in our state were named Olivia while 1,353 were named Liam, records show.

These were the top 10 male names in 2020:
- Liam
- Noah
- Lucas
- Jacob
- Ethan
- Joseph
- Michael

Olivia held onto the top spot in New York for the second straight after 1,062 new baby girls were given the name last year. Meanwhile, Liam was once again the top vote-getting among boys in both New York and across the U.S. where both names were chosen in the top spot.

Nationally, Liam once again was the top male name, followed by Noah and Oliver. Olivia also marked its second consecutive year as the top female name, followed by Emma and Ava.
The Social Security Administration started releasing the annual list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880. The agency also notes that popular culture influences baby names.
Over the past 100 years, the male name Michael has held the top spot most often at 44 times, while the female name Mary has been ranked No. 1 for 35 times over the same period.
