Patch Weekend Movie Guide: 'Jackie,' 'Rules Don't Apply,' 'Incarnate'

Natalie Portman stars as Jackie O, and Warren Beatty makes his return to the big screen. Find out what to see and what to skip.

We've got the verdict on "Jackie," "Rules Don't Apply" and "Incarnate," plus a fuzzy flick out on home video for the whole family. Here's what to see and what to skip. Plus, check out the trailers.

Opening This Weekend

"Jackie" — Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard, Greta Gerwig, John Hurt, directed by Pablo Larraín

Natalie Portman stars front and center as Jacqueline Lee Kennedy in this biopic set after President John F. Kennedy's assassination. History purists won't find much in the way of comprehensiveness from this focused original screenplay, but Portman will offer the best work of her career as the grieving former first lady.

The verdict: See it. "Jackie" has already been called an Oscar contender.

"Rules Don't Apply" — Warren Beatty, Alden Ehrenreich, Lily Collins, directed by Warren Beatty

After a 15-year absence, Warren Beatty returns to the big screen as both director and supporting actor in this romantic dramedy. Two Hollywood fish-out-of-water (Ehrenreich and Collins) fall for each working for Howard Hughes, but their boss's mandate against intimately entangled employees throws a wrench in the gears. Beatty reportedly worked on bringing the film to the screen for 40 years, but all that development time didn't fix the flatness of "Rules."

The verdict: Skip it. See "Jackie" instead.

"Incarnate" — Carice van Houten, Aaron Eckhart, David Mazouz, directed by Brad Peyton

"Incarnate" marks another cookie-cutter horror flick that didn't quite make the Halloween cutoff. This one follows a distraught mother who summons a specialist in order to enter the unconscious mind of her possessed child. If it sounds like a cheap mash-up of similar flicks, that's because it unabashedly is.

The verdict: Skip it. The scariest thing about "Incarnate" is that Aaron Eckhart said yes.

Quick Cuts

"The BFG" (Home Video) — Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Jemaine Clement, directed by Steven Spielberg

See it: Steven Spielberg translates Roald Dahl's classic children's novel to the screen, and a shaky third act shouldn't prevent bringing your family together on the couch for some bonding time.

"Don't Think Twice" (Home Video) — Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Mike Birbiglia, directed by Mike Birbiglia

See it: An improv comedy troupe gets the feature-length treatment in this very funny, partly sad, and surprisingly deep film from second-time director and longtime comedian Mike Birbiglia.

"War Dogs" (Home Video) — Jonah Hill, Miles Teller, Bradley Cooper, directed by Todd Phillips

See it: Comedy director Todd Phillips ushers this true, undoubtedly exaggerated story of two unlikely government contractors who con their way into a huge arms contract in Iraq.

Until next week folks, save me a seat!
