Three were hospitalized and 884 people evacuated and loaded onto other ferries when a fire erupted on a Staten Island ferry Thursday night.

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Newly released photos show the harrowing end to a journey to Staten Island aboard a ferry that suffered a large fire Thursday.
More than 800 passengers were forced to evacuate the Staten Island ferry after a fire broke out in the engine room just after 5 p.m., according to the New York City Fire Department.
Three people were hospitalized with minor injuries, according to the FDNY.

During the rescue, 884 people were evacuated and loaded onto other ferries as the boat on fire was sealed, the department said.

NY Waterway, the transit company that manages the ferry, named the boat as the Franklin Delano Roosevelt ferry and named the captain as Tom Beckedorff.

All passengers were brought to St. George on Staten Island, NY Waterway noted.
Photos shows crowds of people in life vests making their way off the ferry in the dark.

Inside, the mood appears to have been calm, and photos show at least one or two New Yorkers had small smiles for the wintery waterway adventure.

"This was not a lucky event," said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Frank Leeb. "This is years and a long time of preparation and training ... the crew acted as the crew was supposed to act."
