Adopt me

STILL IN NEED - NEW PHOTO ON THREAD! Rumi is a senior guy that has a thyroid condition, loves head butts and cheek rubs, help him find his forever home.

Hello all! My name is Rumi. I'm a shy but very sweet cat that will warm up to you with patience and a gentle approach. I enjoy to head-butt people's hands and also when I get cheek rubs. I love dry treats as well. I've been at the shelter for quite a while now, and my behavior has been getting better so I think I'm ready to go to my new home. Can you give me a chance? Please ask the shelter staff for me!

KNOWN HISTORY:

Rumi was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:

5/31/20
Lying somewhat relaxed in his den. Makes eye contact with wide pupils but remains in place when spoken softly. Not interested in treats or toys given. Seems a little tense. Gave shor-line cover with feliway.

6/02/20
Hiding in the den. Makes eye contact with wide pupils through the holes and it was noticed that she started to shake a little. Hisses at the assessor when spoken softly and remains very stressed. Left some treats. Something stressful happened to him prior the interaction? Not ready to interact yet.

6/03/20
Lying in the den. Hisses at the assessor on approach but pokes head out when spoken softly and makes eye contact. Sniffs treats offered but doesn't eat them. Offered valerian scented toys but wasn't interested either. Seems to be a calm cat, just still fearful. Needs more time to adjust.

6/14/20
Hiding in den. Got him out of the den today with temptation treats. He seemed wary and would retreat with sudden noises but seemed more relaxed overall. Will move upstairs as his neighboring cats are not so happy.
*Afternoon update: moved upstairs to CLWH. Seemed stressed but didn't escalate. Gave kennel cover. Will check on him tomorrow morning. Den was removed.

6/15/20
Hiding in litter box on approach. Tenses up when opening the door and retreats to the main kennel space but then comes back to the litter box. Allows gentle petting on the head, body softens after about a minute of gentle strokes. Eats temptation treats when left alone. Stressed but doesn't escalate to hissing/growling. Getting adjusted to the new room. Has potential to warm up slowly.

*Afternoon update: went to visit him. He became very alert on approach but remained in his litter box. Slowly started to warm up to petting and would rub against hand and also lean in for cheek rubs. Ate some dry food and treats offered. Still wary and tense but small progress today! He was given a hiding box and still has the kennel cover up.

6/16/20
Same as yesterday. Wary but accepts petting, leaning for cheek rubs slightly. Ate temptation treats offered. Kennel cover was removed to see how he reacts. So far hasn't shown any agitation signs. Ate all his food this morning!
Afternoon update: Lying in litter box. Alert on approach. Warms up to petting and leans in for cheek rubs, then eats tuna offered in front of the assessor. Still adjusting. Timid but seems to be a sweet boy! Definitely some progress going on here.

6/17/20
* Updated assessment today!

6/22/20
Resting behind litter box. Becomes alert on approach. Head-butts the assessor's hand when extended and enjoys gentle petting. Eats all treats offered. Comes forward and scans the room. Accepts gentle petting then nips and swats at the assessor. Pet-induced? Agitation? gave back the cubby cover.

6/23/20
Pokes head out of the cubby portal when hearing assessor speak to another cat. Eats all treats. Rubs against hand and enjoys gentle petting without escalating this time.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:

Rumi's behavior has been improving for the past few days. He seems to be a very shy but sweet cat that warms up with a gentle approach, a calm environment and a lot of temptation treats. Rumi would rub against your hand when spoken softly. He enjoys head and cheek rubs as well. Rumi might benefit from environmental enrichment to keep him mentally stimulated.

Rumi may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
