Schumer Calls For Trump’s Removal After ‘Insurrection’
"This president must not hold office one day longer," he said, calling for either invoking the 25th Amendment or impeachment.

NEW YORK CITY — Sen. Chuck Schumer joined a growing wave of lawmakers calling for President Donald Trump’s immediate removal after an unprecedented mob attack on the U.S. Capitol.
“What happened at the U.S. Capitol yesterday was an insurrection against the United States, incited by President Trump,” he tweeted Thursday.
“This president must not hold office one day longer,” he wrote.

The quickest and most effective way—it can be done today—to remove this president from office would be for the Vice President to immediately invoke the 25th amendment.
If the Vice President and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress must reconvene to impeach President Trump.

Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader and soon-to-be Majority Leader, is the highest-ranking Democrat yet to call for Trump’s removal following the riot.
The events Wednesday stunned the nation and the world. People watched in disbelief as a swarm of Trump supporters overran police, breached the Capitol building and ransacked it. Four people died during the assault, which followed a speech by Trump who repeated false claims that the presidential election — that he handily lost, by every objective and legal measure — was stolen from him.

Schumer, like other members of New York City’s congressional delegation and lawmakers, sheltered for as the mob stormed the building.
A day later and after affirming President-elect Joe Biden’s win, Schumer echoed demands by many Democratic and Republican lawmakers: remove Trump from office.
“The quickest and most effective way—it can be done today—to remove this president from office would be for the Vice President to immediately invoke the 25th amendment,” Schumer tweeted. “If the Vice President and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress must reconvene to impeach President Trump.”
Other New York City lawmakers wasted no time. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and newly sworn in Rep. Jamaal Bowman both joined a resolution to impeach Trump.
The resolution sponsored by Rep. Ilhan Omar was crafted while she was “extracted in a secure location” during the siege, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. Swift action must be taken to protect the republic, she wrote.
“The President incited an attack on Congress,” she wrote. “He is deeply unstable. The Cabinet must invoke the 25th amendment.
“Congress must also pursue impeachment and removal of the President.”
We should not be adjourned. We must reconvene to proceed with articles of impeachment immediately. https://t.co/Bv126jUKnY

Ocasio-Cortez also called for action against Senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, who spearheaded an effort to snarl the certification of Biden’s election based on Trump’s unfounded and disproven voter fraud claims.
Sen. Cruz, you must accept responsibility for how your craven, self-serving actions contributed to the deaths of four people yesterday. And how you fundraised off this riot.
Both you and Senator Hawley must resign. If you do not, the Senate should move for your expulsion. https://t.co/O2m6T59LYP
