NEW YORK CITY — Better double-check the speed limit if you plan to zoom around New York City.

Speed limits will be lowered on 45 miles of city streets as part of an increased effort to curb crashes and fatalities, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday.

"We're focusing on some of the areas where we've seen the most crashes," de Blasio said. "This is a way to create safety and accountability — the lower the speed limit, you send a message to everyone. These are the rules, you've got to live by these rules, if you don't there will be consequences."

The speed limit changes cover major corridors in all boroughs but Manhattan.

De Blasio acknowledged that many motorists will gripe about the changes, but he said they're necessary to save lives.

He also said NYPD officers will begin an enforcement blitz this week, which officials have dubbed "Streets Week!"

"They'll focus on the protecting pedestrians and cyclists all over the five boroughs," he said. "They'll be targeting drivers who speed and who failed to yield to pedestrians and cyclists. And the message will be clear: dangerous driving has no place in New York City."
