NYC Weather: 'Significant' Snow, Sleet Expected This Week

Between 3 and 5 inches of snow and sleet is expected to fall Thursday night.

NEW YORK CITY — A wintry blast of snow, sleet and freezing rain threatens to gum up New York City yet again.

Forecasters warn the city faces enough snowfall starting Thursday that the National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook.

The culprit is a low pressure system that will sprinkle snow on the city that day before a less-welcome mix that night.

"New snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible," the outlook states.

New York City on Tuesday woke up from a night of rain shows that washed away much of what remains of two recent significant snowfalls.

Scattered rain and fog will continue Tuesday morning before the giving way to mostly cloudy conditions, followed by a sunny Wednesday.

But clouds and low wind chills will return Wednesday night — a prelude to a snowy Thursday and Friday.

Tuesday
Rain likely before 10am, then scattered showers between 10am and 11am. Areas of fog before 11am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 50. South wind 9 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night
Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming clear, with a low around 26. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. Breezy, with a northwest wind 16 to 23 mph.

Wednesday
Sunny, with a high near 35. Wind chill values between 15 and 25. Northwest wind 13 to 18 mph.

Wednesday Night
Increasing clouds, with a low around 23. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. North wind 7 to 11 mph.

Thursday
Snow likely, mainly after 2pm. Cloudy, with a high near 31. Northeast wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Thursday Night
Snow before 11pm, then snow and sleet between 11pm and 2am, then freezing rain and sleet after 2am. Low around 28. Blustery. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Friday
Freezing rain and sleet before 11am, then rain and sleet likely between 11am and 2pm, then a chance of rain and snow after 2pm. High near 35. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Friday Night
A 30 percent chance of snow before 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 26.
