Spike Lee's 'Crooklyn' To Be Screened For Free Across New York City

Spike Lee's 1994 film "Crooklyn" won City Halls' "One Film, One New York" contest and will be screened free in each borough on Sept. 13.

NEW YORK CITY — On Sept. 13 New Yorkers will be able to enjoy a movie night with a few million of their closest friends. Spike Lee's 1994 film "Crooklyn" will be screened for free in parks and movie theaters across New York City's five boroughs in an effort to united the city through film, the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment announced Wednesday.

Lee's film "Crooklyn" — a coming of age tale set in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn during the summer of 1973 — beat four other movies to win the "One Film, One New York" competition conducted by the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment.

Throughout the month of August, New Yorkers were able to vote for their favorite film to win the "One Film, One New York" contest. The four other films in the running were "On the Town" (1949), "New York, New York" (1977), "Desperately Seeking Susan" (1985) and "The Wedding Banquet" (1993).

"We are thrilled that native son Spike Lee's film is the one New Yorkers have chosen to watch together on September 13th," Julie Menin, the city media and entertainment commissioner, said in a statement. "Film has the power to unite us in these tumultuous times, and this film celebrates New York in such a creative and resonant way. We're also delighted to provide the opportunity for all New Yorkers to come out, and bring the whole family, at no cost, and to support for the city's culturally vital independent theaters."
