NEW YORK CITY — Father's Day weekend may get off to a stormy start Friday as an approaching cold front brings the chance for severe weather, damaging winds and large hail to New York City.
A hazardous weather outlook was in effect for the city and other parts of southeast New York on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. In its latest forecast, the NWS said showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop ahead of a cold front and move through the area Friday between 4-10 p.m.
Some storms could be strong to severe, according to forecasters. Storms will be capable of producing gusty and damaging winds, large hail, and brief, heavy downpours.

"Dewpoints will be in the 40s and 50s both (Saturday and Sunday), with highs in the 70s to low 80s. This will give the air a comfortable feel," the NWS said in its Friday forecast discussion. "We could actually drop to the upper 40s at the usual cool spots Saturday night."
However, New Yorkers should enjoy the cool, mild weekend. Forecasters are predicting a prolonged heat wave to settle over the city starting mid-week next week. Heat index values may approach or exceed 100 degrees at times, especially Wednesday through Friday.
