Supreme MetroCards Sell Out, Craze Takes Over Subway Turnstiles

NEW YORK CITY — New York City's hypebeasts flocked to select subway stations Monday in pursuit of exclusive Supreme-branded MetroCards. The MetroCards have since sold out, but more may be coming soon, according to the MTA.

Update: The MTA released the final Supreme MetroCards on Wednesday morning.

"We've had a run on machines today and may be sold out of Supreme Metrocards until we can replenish. Check back in a day or so," The MTA tweeted on Monday.

The cards, emblazoned with the strewtwear company's red and white logo, were dispersed at random from MetroCard vending machines at Broadway-Lafayette, the 125th Street 2/3, Queens Plaza, Marcy Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, Prince Street, Spring Street and Union Square stations, according to the MTA. The cards were also being sold at Supreme's SoHo store as part of the brand's spring and summer 2017 accessory lineup.

The cards were stocked in select machines at the stations and were dispersed at random for any value. A rumor that the cards were only being distributed for cards with a value of $75 was squashed by the MTA, but not before some fell victim.

As with any coveted release, re-sellers were quick to hit the Subway with the hopes of snagging enough Supreme MetroCards to turn a profit. Hundreds of the cards, most containing the minimum MetroCard balance of $5.50, are currently on the market for around $50 on Ebay, but some ambitious resellers have marketed the cards for as much as $150.
