Thanksgiving 2018: What's Open, Closed In NYC

Here's what you need to know as the day of the turkey lurks.

NEW YORK CITY — The city that never sleeps is about to become the city that never stops cooking. Thanksgiving is coming, and all that cooking demands all that shopping.

Most public buildings will be closed Thursday in observance of the holiday but fortunately some stores and supermarkets will have limited hours for those of you who forgot that must-have can of pumpkin puree or that to make turkey, you need a turkey.

But you'll likely be rushing out into streets that are slightly less hectic, as alternate-side parking rules will be suspended Thursday.

Subways & Buses

The MTA subway and bus systems typically run on a Sunday schedule on Thanksgiving Day, meaning service is more limited than usual. The MTA has not yet released its service changes (we'll update the story when they do), but until then, here's a look at last year's.

And for those fleeing the city, here's information about Metro-North schedule changes from Nov. 21 to Nov. 25.

Trash & Recycling

The Department of Sanitation won't be collecting garbage, recycling or organics on Thanksgiving Day. If your trash and organics are normally picked up on Thursdays, you can put them out after 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving for pickup on Friday. But you'll have to wait to put out recycling until Wednesday, Nov. 29.

There's also no street cleaning on Thanksgiving, so don't worry about alternate-side parking rules.

Schools, Public Buildings

All New York City public schools are closed on Thanksgiving Day. So are all city, state and federal government buildings.

Thanksgiving is a postal holiday, post offices are closed and mail won't be delivered on Thursday.
