These Are The Best School Districts In NYC, New Ranking Says

NEW YORK CITY — Parents choosing where to live in New York City often look first at the quality of the local school district.

The best school district in New York City is District 13, according to the 2027 Best School Districts in America list recently released by the education ranking service Niche.

District 13 is New York's 36th-best school district in the state.

The district includes Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, and a sliver of Park Slope.

According to Niche, the district has 19,380 students in Pre-K through 12th grade, with a student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1.

State test scores show that 65 percent of students are at least proficient in math and 68 percent are proficient in reading.

Other school districts in the New York City area that got an “A-” or better grade, in ranked order, are:

1. New York City Geographic District No. 13 (North Brooklyn)
2. New York City Geographic District No. 1 (Lower East Side And East Village)
3. New York City Geographic District No. 2 (FiDi, Chelsea, Tribeca, West Village, Greenwich Village, Upper East Side, Midtown and Hell's Kitchen)
4. New York City Geographic District No. 3 (Upper West Side, Morningside Heights, and part of Harlem)
5. New York City Geographic District No. 22 (Marine Park, Mill Basin, Flatlands, Ditmas Park, and Manhattan Beach)
6. New York City Geographic District No. 26 (Bayside, Little Neck, Douglaston, Fresh Meadows, Oakland Gardens, Bellerose, Floral Park, and Glen Oaks)
7. New York City Geographic District No. 31 (Staten Island)
8. New York City Geographic District No. 4 (East Harlem)
9. New York City Geographic District No. 25 (Flushing, Whitestone, and College Point)
10. New York City Geographic District No. 28 (Jamaica, Forest Hills, Rego Park, and Richmond Hill)

Niche’s rankings combine federal and state data, school statistics, and over 3 million reviews from students, parents, and teachers to evaluate schools beyond test scores.

This year, Niche updated its methodology and created separate public and private rankings for categories including arts, diversity, college prep and teachers. It also introduced school-type-specific methodologies for boarding schools and private online high schools.

“Families deserve a complete view of their options, whether they’re evaluating schools in their area or exploring what’s available elsewhere,” Niche founder and CEO Luke Skurman said in a news release.
