NEW YORK CITY — Severe thunderstorms soon could be on New York City's horizon, forecasters warn.

The city is under a hazardous weather outlook Thursday that carries the threat of damaging winds, heavy rainfall and worse.

"An isolated tornado is not out of the question," the National Weather Service outlook states.

Weather conditions as of Thursday morning hadn't reached levels that would prompt a warning or other alert, forecasters said. But they also said uncertainty over a warm front made predictions difficult.

"Exactly how unstable the atmosphere gets will determine how widespread any severe activity will be," an NWS briefing states. "This will be evaluated as the day unfolds."

Meteorologists warned the greatest chance for severe thunderstorms was between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Aside from the chance of storms, temperatures will be cooler than the heat New Yorkers experiences over the past few days. Highs will reach 78 degrees, according to the forecast.
