Transform Your Breakfast Routine With These 5 Egg Hacks

The perfect scramble, a speedy omelet and how to hard boil an egg without a pot. Yes, really.

Eggs are convenient, tasty, and super easy to whip up if you’re in a hurry. But the whole crack-and-scramble routine can get a little mundane. Spice up your morning routine with these five egg hacks.

1. Is it Fresh?

While the shelf-life of an egg is pretty long – we’re talking weeks – they’ll eventually spoil. If you’re worried about the freshness of an egg, just (carefully) sink it in a glass of water. If the egg drops straight to the bottom, it’s fresh. If it floats, toss it out.

2. Become a Scramble-Master

If you’re wondering how professional chefs attain evenly cooked, custardy scrambled eggs every time, the secret isn’t as daunting as you might think. Just keep the heat at a medium temperature, use one hand to lightly shake the pan in a circular motion, while using the other hand to stir the eggs in the opposite direction – with a spatula, of course. Then, viola! Restaurant-worthy eggs.

3. Make an Omelet in One Minute Flat

If you’re in a rush, the microwave will be your absolute best friend. Just scramble an egg in a small bowl or coffee mug, add a little cheese, and pop it in the microwave for one minute.

4. Hard-boil Eggs in a Coffee Pot

If you’re short on space (i.e., live in New York) and cooking on a stove-top isn’t an option, just use a coffee pot to hard (or soft) boil your eggs. Gently place eggs into the glass pitcher (mini-coffee makers will probably only hold two eggs). Add fresh water into the reservoir of the coffee maker, close the lid, and click the "on" button. Let the water drip over your eggs until they are completely submerged. Leave for 10 to 12 minutes (fully submerged), then carefully pour the hot water into a sink, and pour cold water over the hard-boiled eggs. Allow to cool, then enjoy!

5. Ham and Egg Cups Will be Your New Go-to App

Plan on feeding a crowd on a budget? Then these ham and egg cups will be your new go-to. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees, spray a 12-cup muffin tin with cooking spray, line each cup with a slice of ham (add cheese if you’d like), and then crack an egg into each ham cup. Season with salt and pepper. Bake until eggs are cooked through – 12 to 15 minutes – then serve. P.s., everyone at the office will love them.
