WATCH: Applause Rings Through NYC For Essential Workers

New Yorkers across the five boroughs clapped from windows, stoops and street corners for those on the coronavirus frontlines, video shows.

NEW YORK, NY — For two minutes on Friday evening, applause rang through New York City as New Yorkers across the five boroughs leaned out their windows to clap for workers on the frontlines of the coronavirus fight.

From banging pots and pans in Midtown, to groups clapping from Brooklyn stoops, to the city's First Lady Chirlane McCray and son Dante de Blasio applauding from the steps of Gracie Mansion, city dwellers let anyone keeping the city running during a statewide stay-at-home order order hear their gratitude.

"To every healthcare professional, grocery store worker, delivery person, truck driver, sanitation worker, friend and neighbor: We appreciate you," McCray tweeted with the video of her and Dante.

The #ClapBecauseWeCare round of applause, which broke out at 7 p.m., was encouraged by the Karla Otto public relations agency and spread among city agencies and officials.

New Yorkers were asked to clap from wherever they are – balconies, living rooms, gardens – to show their appreciation, from a safe distance.
