Watch Replay: President Trump Speaks Aboard USS Intrepid In NYC

Trump made his first trip home Thursday and spoke on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Coral Sea.

NEW YORK, NY — President Donald Trump made the first speech of his presidency in his hometown of New York on Thursday night aboard the USS Intrepid.

Trump speech on the World War II-era aircraft carrier, which now serves as a museum on the Hudson River, was part of a larger ceremony to commemorate the 75 anniversary of the Battle of Coral Sea. The ceremony featured a singing of the Australian and United States' national anthems by a group called "The American Bombshells," appearances by veterans who fought in the Battle of Coral Sea and speeches by Australian Billionaires Rupert Murdoch and Anthony Pratt

Before the event, Trump and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had a private meeting. Trump was supposed to meet with Turnbull in Midtown Manhattan during the afternoon, but delayed his flight to New York City to celebrate the passing of an Obamacare repeal bill in the House of Representatives — a move which cut the meeting with Turnbull down from an hour to 30 minutes, according to reports.

The decision to cut down Turnbull's time was seen as "an amazing snub," an Australian government official told CNN. The meeting was supposed to repair a relationship that got off to a rocky start in February with a contentious phone call that reportedly ended in yelling and Trump cutting the conversation short. Trump disputed reports that the phone call was ever "rough" during his speech, but did say "it got a little testy."

A crowd of a few hundred anti-Trump protesters gathered along the Hudson near the Intrepid to greet the president when he arrived. Check out our live coverage of the protests here.

The president didn't end up arriving at JFK Airport — in a full tux and tie — until around 6:15 p.m. He was then transported via helicopter to the Hudson River waterfront.
