What’s Open Closed New Year’s Day 2021 In NYC

NEW YORK CITY — Even if you don’t partake in alcohol, 2020 is likely to leave a hangover. Luckily, the first day of 2021 looks to be low key.
Just like other years, New Year’s Day will be a good time to sleep in and cozy up because there’s no much open.
Here’s a quick guide to the first day after the worst year.

Government Buildings And Banks
- City, state and federal offices will be closed on New Year's Day.
- Post offices will be closed. Regular mail will not be delivered.
- Many banks will be open on New Year's Eve, but closed on New Year's Day as it's a federal holiday.
Libraries likewise will be closed.

New York Public Library’s grab-and-go locations in fact are closed Dec. 27 through Jan. 3.
All Brooklyn Public Library branches will be closed both Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
Queens Public Library locations offering to-go service will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31. All Queens Public Library locations will be closed New Year’s Day and Jan. 2.
Schools
New York City’s public school students will celebrate their last day of winter recess on Jan. 1. Then it’s back to school, whether remotely or in-person.
Alternate Side Parking
New Yorkers with cars won’t have to make a bleary-eyed New Year’s morning trip to their cars. Alternate side parking is suspended Jan. 1.
Sanitation
Trash and recycling takes a holiday on New Year’s Day too.
If your normal pickup day is Friday, sanitation officials ask if you can set it that evening from 4 p.m. to midnight.

Public transit
- Subways on New Year’s Day will run on a Sunday schedule, according to the MTA. The Staten Island Railway will run on a Saturday schedule.
- Buses will also run on a Sunday schedule during New Year’s Day.
- LIRR trains will run on a weekend/holiday schedule.
- MetroNorth trains will also run on a weekend/holiday schedule as well.
Stores
- Trader Joe's: Stores will be close at 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and close all day Jan. 1.
- Whole Foods: Stores in New York City will be close at 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. They’ll open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on New Year’s Day.
- Costco: Stores will be closed all day Jan. 1.
- Target: Stores will close at 9 p.m. on Dec. 31. They’ll reopen Jan. 1 at 7 a.m. and close at 10 p.m.
