Yankee Stadium’s Coronavirus Vaccine Site Steps Up To Plate
"For one day only, I will declare myself a Yankee fan," Mayor Bill de Blasio said as Yankee Stadium opened up COVID-19 vaccination site.

NEW YORK CITY — New York City’s most notorious Red Sox fan begrudgingly, if temporarily, shifted his allegiance to the Yankees.
“For one day only, I will declare myself a Yankee fan,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday as he donned a Yankees cap.
But there’s a good reason de Blasio — who, again, is mayor of New York City and somehow still a Red Sox fan — cheerfully humiliated himself.

He was standing in front of Yankee Stadium, which that morning just opened as a COVID-19 vaccine “mega site” serving residents of the borough now most affected by the virus.
“This site is for the people of the Bronx, and only for the people of the Bronx,” de Blasio said.

The Yankee Stadium vaccination site is a joint venture between the city, state, the Yankees organization, New York’s National Guard and SOMOS NY.
That alphabet soup of groups hope the site will serve thousands of Bronx residents a week — a potential life saver for a borough where the coronavirus positivity rate stands at least 6.67 percent.
The site’s opening day not only brought de Blasio to the stadium for perhaps his first time as mayor, but attracted Spike Lee and Yankees legend Mariano Rivera.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo didn’t attend the opening day in person but virtually welcomed the opening.
Bronx residents who are eligible for the vaccine can make appointments Bronx residents by visiting Somosvaccinations.com or by calling 1-833-SomosNY.
They're required to bring proof of Bronx residency to their appointments and can do so by showing one of the following:
- State or government-issued ID;
- Statement from landlord;
- Current rent receipt or lease;
- Mortgage records.
Residents can also bring two of the following to show residency:
- Statement from another person;
- Current mail;
- School records.
But that didn’t mean he’d wear the hat any longer than necessary.
“I’ll talk about the full emotional experience later,” he said.
