47 People Arrested in Drug Sweep

A five-month-long drug investigation has led to the arrest of 47 people in a sweep in Clarkstown and Ramapo that began Thursday afternoon, with police officials saying they have also seized hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of drugs, five cars and several guns.

Although most of the people sought in the investigation were in police custody by early this morning, police said this afternoon they are still are searching for another seven people wanted in connection with street-level drug sales.

Police said they believe the investigation and the 37 grand jury indictments that have resulted will have a significant impact on the illegal sale of cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, marijuana and prescription drugs in Rockland County.

"The investigation reflects the new face of law enforcement in Rockland County," said District Attorney Thomas Zugibe. "Law enforcement is working together, cooperating wherever possible to make a significant impact on drug dealing."

The results of the drug investigation were revealed this afternoon as police officials from Clarkstown, Ramapo, Spring Valley and Suffern gathered at Spring Valley police headquarters.

Clarkstown Police Chief Peter Noonan said the investigation lead to charges against 11 people for incidents in Clarkstown, with eight of those people picked up in the sweep. Noonan said two arrests involved the sale of handguns and two arrests involved the sale of heroin.

 Spring Valley Police Chief Paul Modica said today that the investigations used  confidential informants, undercover police officers and tactical surveillance teams. He said that by developing information from the streets, plain-clothes detectives were able to make "buys" at various locations throughout Rockland County.

Participating in the probe, dubbed "Operation Tumbleweed Two," were the Spring Valley Police Department Special Investigations Unit, the Rockland County District Attorney's Office, Clarkstown, Ramapo, and Suffern police departments' Anti-Crime Units. Other agencies involved in the sweep included the New York State Police, the Rockland County Intelligence Center, the Rockland County Sheriff's Department, as well as agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Marshals Service.

Federal immigration officials were also involved with the sweep in Suffern, where police Chief Clarke Osborn said several people charged in the investigation are also suspected of being in the United States illegally.
