86-Year-Old Driver Reverses into Pedestrian and Building

The victim is at Nyack Hospital.

A New City man who hit the gas while backing out of a parking space in New City smashed into a building and a woman who was standing on the sidewalk on Saturday.

Clarkstown Police responded to 191 S. Main St. in New City at 3:10 p.m. April 25.

They found a 2006 Lincoln sedan that had struck the front of the building of 191 S. Main St and a pedestrian.

Police said the driver, John Nawoshik, 86, backed out of a parking spot and stepped on the accelerator, striking the building; and then, still in reverse, striking a 58-year-old woman who was standing on the sidewalk.

The woman, a Riverdale resident, was transported to Nyack Hospital for medical treatment for non- life threatening injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was evaluated at the scene of the accident by responding officers and paramedics. He did not appear intoxicated and did not require medical attention. No arrest was made and no summons was issued.

The driver’s vehicle was towed from the scene. There was no severe structural damage to the building.
