See Update: Police ID Postman Accused Of Shoving Child To Ground, Now Facing Felony Charge
TOWN OF RAMAPO, NY — A postman has been arrested after being accused of assaulting a child while on duty.
The Town of Ramapo Police Department said Friday evening that they became aware of an assault that took place on Thursday evening.
After an investigation, police found that on Thursday night, around 6:25 p.m., in the Viola section of the Town of Ramapo, a 39-year-old Stony Point man, who was an employee of the United States Postal Service, intentionally shoved a 4-year-old child to the ground, while on duty.
"We want to acknowledge the Ramapo Police Department and Chaverim for their actions regarding this incident, where a mail carrier appears to have allegedly violently punched and shoved a child to the ground," Rockland County Legislators Itamar Yeger and Joel Friedman said in a statement. "No matter the circumstances, violence against children is never acceptable. We condemn all harm to children in the strongest terms."
The USPS employee was later found and charged with misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child; and misdemeanor third-degree attempted assault.
Police say the postal worker was released on his own recognizance, and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Ramapo Justice Court.
