LSD, 'Large' Psilocybin Mushroom, And Open Bottle Of Vodka In Tesla Pulled Over In Ramapo: Police

RAMAPO, NY — A traffic stop led to a whole lot of questions for police in Rockland County.

A 29-year-old Tallman resident is now facing felony and misdemeanor drug charges after the stop on Route 59, in Ramapo, led to the seizure of LSD and psilocybin, according to the Ramapo Police Department.

Police said the stop happened Thursday afternoon after an officer assigned to the department's Special Operations Unit saw a Tesla commit several traffic violations on Route 59.

According to the department, the vehicle passed a line of stopped traffic by entering a left-turn-only lane. When the light turned green, police said, the driver accelerated head-on toward oncoming traffic before swerving back into the proper lane to continue straight on Route 59, forcing other drivers to stop to avoid a collision.

Following the stop, police said the officer noticed several prescription pill bottles in the center console of the Tesla. According to the department, the driver then tried to conceal one of the bottles, and the investigation continued. The driver later admitted to sharing prescription medication with another person, cops said.

The investigation led to the discovery of about 40 LSD tabs, a digital scale, a large psilocybin mushroom, two glass pipes containing suspected controlled substance residue, and an open bottle of vodka, according to police.

"This incident is a perfect example of what we mean when we talk about 'looking beyond the car stop,'" the department said in a statement. "Alert, proactive officers who are observant, inquisitive, and who conduct themselves within the guidelines of the law can uncover criminal activity that might otherwise go undetected. This is only one example of good, solid police work."

The driver was charged with felony criminal possession of a controlled substance, and criminal possession of a hallucinogen. He was also issued three traffic tickets.

Following arraignment in Airmont Justice Court, with representatives from the Rockland County District Attorney's Office and the Rockland County Public Defender’s Office present, he was remanded to the Rockland County Jail.
