ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — County Executive Ed Day ordered the flags lowered in Rockland County to honor the service members killed over the weekend.
"The men and women of our Armed Forces willingly put themselves in harm's way to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day," Day said in a statement. "This weekend, our nation suffered a heartbreaking loss with the deaths of American service members serving overseas. On behalf of Rockland County, I extend my deepest condolences to their families, loved ones, and fellow service members."
Day said that although the flags will eventually be flown at full-mast again, the loss will stay with us.
"As a tribute to these brave Americans, flags at all Rockland County government buildings have been lowered to half-staff," Day said. "We will never forget the sacrifices they made in service to our nation, and we remain forever grateful for their courage, commitment, and unwavering dedication to protecting our country."
