1 Airlifted To Westchester Medical Center After Building Explosion In Ramapo

RAMAPO, NY — A building explosion in Rockland County has seriously injured one person.

At 10:46 a.m., on Wednesday, the Ramapo Police Department responded to an explosion and active structure fire at 265 Orange Turnpike, in the Village of Sloatsburg, within the Town of Ramapo.

Upon arrival, the building was engulfed and all occupants had been evacuated, police said. There was one victim who suffered serious injuries. That person was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center. The extent of their injuries is not currently being disclosed, police said.

The explosion and resulting fire are not deemed
suspicious at this time, however, it is still an active investigation. Route 17 was closed in both directions until late afternoon.

Ramapo police were assisted on scene by the Rockland County Sheriff Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Tuxedo Police Department, the Sloatsburg Fire Department, the Tuxedo Fire Department, the Monsey Fire Department, the Monroe Fire Department, the Mahwah Fire Department, the Hillburn Fire Department, the Suffern Fire Department, the Greenwood Lake Fire Department, the Washingtonville Fire Department, and the Woodbury Fire Department.

As of 2:30 p.m., Route 17 has been reopened in both directions.
