Been Buying Your Gas in NJ, Rocklanders? Maybe Not Any More

Are you headed to NJ Monday before the gas tax hike goes into effect Tuesday in New Jersey?

Are you one of those Rockland residents who drive across the border periodically to fill up the tank? Warning: a gas tax hike will go into effect Tuesday in New Jersey, and you'll see the impact immediately at the pump.

The average gas price at the pump, going into Monday, was $2.04 per gallon, according to AAA-Mid Atlantic. Add the gas tax hike, and this is what the average per-pump, per-gallon price will be:

$2.27

That means New Jersey will most likely no longer be among the states with the cheapest gas in the nation. It's a lot closer to New York — where the average is $2.37 and the NYC metropolitan area often sees higher prices.

New York State has the 11th highest gas prices in the nation, and now New Jersey will have the 14th highest — after having the seventh lowest, according to gasbuddy.com. Oklahoma has the cheapest gas at $1.98.

Indeed, the 23-cent hike means New Jersey will now edge closer to Pennsylvania, where the average gas price is $2.40, and it will surge pass Delaware, where it's $2.09.

The change still puts New Jersey behind its highest average price in 2015, when it was $2.63, and way behind 2014, when it was $3.57. But now it's ahead of the national average of $2.22.
